Gentle & Lowly- He always lives to make intercession for them

Using Hebrews 7:23-28, George drew attention to how Jesus serves as both our intercessor and advocate in heaven, refreshing our standing with God moment by moment and in times of desperate need. Through examples of runners being cheered across the finish line and the transformative knowledge of having someone truly in your corner, George reminded us about Christ's ongoing work on our behalf. Whether struggling with hidden shame or seeking fresh hope, we are each invited to discover how Jesus' gentle and lowly heart reaches into our deepest darkness, shame and needs, becoming stepping stones to God's grace.

Five-day Devotional Material to accompany this sermon

Day 1: The Person and Work of Christ

Scripture: Hebrews 7:26-28

Reflection: In these verses, we see five significant aspects of the person and work of Jesus. First, his permanent achievement: Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, unlike earthly priests who were limited by death. Second, his limitless power: his sacrifice on the cross was a once-and-for-all act that continues to have an ongoing effect, saving us completely. Third, his sinless character: Jesus is holy, innocent, and unstained, set apart from sinners and exalted above the heavens. Fourth, his present ministry: he lives to make intercession for us, applying his past sacrifice to our present needs. Finally, his complete offering: Jesus offered himself once for all, atoning for our sins and making us right with God. These aspects assure us of his constant presence, power, and love in our lives. We'll develop some of these themes in the upcoming daily devotions.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for your perfect and eternal priesthood. Help me to rest in the assurance of your complete work on my behalf. May I live each day in the light of your holiness and love, trusting in your intercession and rejoicing in your limitless power. Amen.

Day 2: Jesus, Our High Priest

Bible Verse: Hebrews 7:24-25

Reflection: Jesus is our eternal High Priest, who intercedes for us continually. Unlike earthly priests, his priesthood is permanent and his power to save is limitless. He understands our weaknesses and stands before the Father on our behalf. Consider how Jesus’ intercession impacts your daily life and your relationship with God. Reflect on the illustration of being cheered on in a race by spectators.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, my High Priest, who intercedes for me. Help me to draw near to you through him, knowing that he is standing on my behalf. Strengthen my faith today. Amen.

Day 3: Intercession and Advocacy

Bible Verse: 1 John 2:1

Reflection: Jesus not only intercedes for us but also acts as our advocate. When we sin, he stands by us, aligning himself with us and presenting our case before the Father. His advocacy is a reminder of his deep love and commitment to us, even in our failures. Reflect on how Jesus’ advocacy gives you confidence to approach God, even when you fall short.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for being my advocate. When I sin, remind me of your love and help me to turn back to you. Thank you for standing by me and presenting my case before the Father. Amen.

Day 4: The Joy of Jesus

Bible Verse: Hebrews 12:2

Reflection: Jesus finds joy in engaging with us in our brokenness, as we repent of our sin. His heart is turned towards us, and he delights in helping us overcome our struggles. This joy was part of what sustained him through the cross. Reflect on the joy Jesus finds in you and how that can transform your understanding of his love.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for the joy you find in me, even in my brokenness. May your joy be my strength as I walk with you each day. Amen.

Day 5: Complete in Christ

Bible Verse: Colossians 2:9-10

Reflection: In Christ, we are made complete. His work on the cross and his ongoing intercession and advocacy ensure that we lack nothing in our spiritual journey. We are filled with his fullness, and his grace is sufficient for every need. Reflect on what it means to be complete in Christ and how that affects your daily life.

Prayer: Father, thank you for making me complete in Christ. Help me to live in the fullness of his grace and to rely on his strength in every situation. Amen.
